What does GDPR mean?
GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation and it is a set of data protection legislation that the European Union has been working on for the past 4 years. GDPR will become law in the EU, including Ireland, on May 25th 2018. Because GDPR is a regulation (not a directive) Ireland does not need to draft any new laws, instead it will apply automatically in Ireland from May 25th.
What is its purpose?
There are two main reasons for this new law that the European Union has agreed;
- It replaces all existing diverse data protection legislation that is in place in different EU countries with one consistent and agreed set of laws that will apply equally across the Union.
- GDPR introduces a set of “digital rights” for all EU citizens and therefore ensuring that organisations change the approach they have towards citizens’ data, in terms of what data they store and how they can use it.
How does it affect my Dynamics NAV ERP software?
GDPR gives individuals rights of access to data you hold on them, these rights vary from just being informed to erasure and objection. So, for example, if an individual asks that you delete all data you hold on them you have to be able to find every record relating to the individual within your ERP and prove that you have deleted it. This is not as easy as it might sound as your ERP software will hold data in a wide variety of tables and fields, a task that will be made even more difficult if you have lots of customisations on your system.
What happens if I don’t comply?
Once a request is received, your organisation has 1 month to present the data to the person making the request. If no action is taken the new legislation gives data protection bodies power to enforce, and not just direct as under previous laws. The penalty they can impose for non-compliance can be up to the greater of €20 million or 4% of global annual turnover.
Is your Dynamics NAV ready?
